tapeheads screenshots

i had never heard of Tapeheads until last weekend when i saw it on the shelf with “JOHN CUSACK / TIM ROBBINS” and the title of the movie bursting off the dvd case’s spine in a pretty alarming typeface. i’m so glad i rented it, it was really something else. i can’t believe that after years of getting stuck in horrible conversations with film students namedropping “cult classics” and “powerful pieces of cinema” at parties that i’ve never heard any mention of this movie.

it’s the story of two friends who get fired from their job as security guards and then start their own music video production company - Video Aces. cameos include but are not limited to: doug e fresh, sam moore, ted nugent, jello biafra, courtney love, junior walker, stiv bators, weird al yankovic and zed from the police academy movies.

if you haven’t seen it, you should check it out. heaps of screenshots after the jump

new order “face up” live (tokyo, 1985)

“face up” is one of my favourite songs of all time (top 5) and i can’t believe it’s taken me this long to think about finding a video for it. this is from their gig at shinjuku koseinenkin hall, tokyo, 2nd of may, 1985. FACT 150 for anyone who cares…

pretty special.

also, while i’m here:

(directed by jonathan demme)
equally incredible. the icy cold aesthetic and precision of gillian gilbert. the struggle of bernard sumner. stephen morris’ combination of focus and mild paranoia. peter hook and his brooding leather jacketry. the ribbit solo. i could go on…

tropical blitz

in the early days of cassette (mid 2006) we held a party called “Tropical Blitz: The Short Shorts Party”. we rented heaps of palm trees, got people to wear short shorts (probably about a 70% hit rate), and bought 50 coconuts, drilled holes in them, cleaned them out, put bubble tea straws in them, sold them to the bar and got the bar to sell malibu and pineapple in them ($10 for the first one but then $5 to refill your coconut). it was a good time.

pictured above is felix out the front of tropical blitz. felix plays the guitar part on canyons‘ “apples & pears”. additionally, he has been in / is currently in a stack of great perth bands including, but not limited to, the macarburettors, the bad taste, captain johnny & the cap guns (is that what they were called?) and bobby blackbird & the bluejays. as far as i know he was never in rhibosome.
